About Calmocean

We have run this process before, on both sides of the table

Calmocean was founded in 2021 by Petter Heier and Magnus Hammerstad, who between them had already built and led the recycling and decommissioning business at Grieg Green. Petter had worked the yard side as ship repair manager, superintendent and CEO; Magnus is a marine engineer from NTNU and Chalmers who spent nearly a decade building those divisions. They started Calmocean because they thought the industry was answering the wrong question.

The wrong question is what do we do with this vessel now that it has stopped earning? By then most of the options are gone. The right question is asked years earlier, at the newbuilding yard, and again at every dry-docking after that. That is what life-cycle thinking means in practice, and it is why we work across the whole life of an asset rather than only at the end of it.

It also means telling owners when recycling is not the answer. A significant number of ‘too-early-to-recycle’ assets can be converted, wholly or partly, for a new life in a different segment — often on better commercial terms than scrap. Finding that route takes a network of owners, naval architects, yards and financiers, which is the other thing we have spent our careers building.

Today the team is spread across Norway, Turkey, India, China, Southeast Asia and North America, because supervision only counts if someone is actually standing on the quay. Everything we do is documented to a standard your regulators, financiers and stakeholders can use directly — and audited against ISO 9001 by DNV.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Where our work contributes

Shipping’s environmental and social impact is concentrated in places most people never see: the yards where ships are built, repaired and dismantled, and on board the ships themselves. Five of the seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals are the ones our work touches directly. We do not claim the other twelve.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

    Goal 3Good Health and Well-being

    What we do

Shipyards are among the most hazardous workplaces in the world, whether a vessel is being built, repaired or recycled. Our assessments examine occupational health provision, protective equipment, medical facilities and incident reporting at every yard we visit.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Goal 8Decent Work and Economic Growth

    What we do

We audit labor conditions, not only environmental ones: working hours, wages, the right to organize, the treatment of migrant workers, and the use of child labor. A yard that manages its waste well and its people badly does not pass.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

    Goal 12Responsible Consumption and Production

    What we do

A ship is tens of thousands of tonnes of recoverable steel and a quantity of hazardous material that has to be handled properly. Inventories of Hazardous Materials — maintained across a vessel’s whole life, not only at its end — and our yard assessments exist to make sure the first happens without the second causing harm.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water

    Goal 14Life Below Water

    What we do

Where and how a ship is dismantled determines whether oils, paints and heavy metals reach the sea. Containment, drainage and the condition of the intertidal zone are part of every environmental assessment we carry out.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Goal 16Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

    What we do

Governance is one of the five graded categories in our criteria set. We assess anti-corruption controls, permits and licences, contractual transparency and how a yard handles grievances — because a facility that cannot be held to account cannot be relied on for anything else.

These are assessed, not asserted. Every yard is measured against a published set of 232 factors by an independent assessor on site, and the results are graded and reported.

The Sustainable Development Goal icons are the property of the United Nations. Their use here is informational and does not imply UN endorsement of Calmocean or of its services.
